For the second year, members of the GPP staff took the day off to volunteer through Junior Achievement at its JA in a Day event on November 3, 2017. This year, 15 GPP volunteers attended an hour-long on-site training program at the Richardson ISD Professional Development Center to prepare them to work with Bowie Middle School students at the JA Finance Park®. JA Finance Park enables middle and high school students to build foundations for making intelligent lifelong personal finance decisions, in a program correlated to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students learn about the many pieces of a personal budget, such as rent/mortgage, car payments, insurance, savings, entertainment, groceries and more! As students strive to create a balanced budget, they begin to understand the value of money and make the connection between hard work, education, and their future earnings.
Approximately 60 students attend. Members of our team asked thought-provoking questions throughout the day and facilitated the group discussion regarding budgeting and spending. It was a rewarding and fun experience for GPP as well as the students!
