On Saturday, February 17, Goldin Peiser & Peiser hosted a Habitat for Humanity build in McKinney, Texas with the students from the University of North Texas’ Beta Alpha Psi, an honors organization for accounting, finance, and information systems students. A total of 28 people participated in the build, including the Otubu family, future owners of the Habitat for Humanity home. Although the day began in the pouring rain, it did not dampen the spirits of the volunteers. The group divided into teams, tackling various jobs throughout the house: they spackled walls, built cabinets, installed doors, and laid flooring, among other tasks.
Although building houses was a bit out of his wheelhouse, GPP Tax Partner Kevin Harris thoroughly enjoyed his volunteer experience with Habitat for Humanity. He states, “I am not much of a ‘handyman,’ so I was a bit nervous operating a nail gun or circular saw, but the supervisors were very helpful to maintain a safe environment while allowing us to learn new skills. The group I was with installed closet doors in the bedrooms, and it was a true team effort to ensure the doors were level as well as aesthetically pleasing. It was great to meet members of the family, and their appreciation for our efforts was evident. Partnering with the students from North Texas was an added benefit, as this interaction was so valuable to see the dedication and selflessness of the young adults from both UNT and GPP.”
GPP Tax Manager Jaime Rodriguez added that he worked with several groups of students installing shelves in the closets of each room, as well as helped install doorframes for the main rooms. "Overall it was great getting to work with Habitat for Humanity and the Otubu family. The family worked right along with us, and was extremely appreciative of the hard work that everyone was putting in to make their dream a reality." He also enjoyed the time he spent interacting with the accounting students from UNT. "I also got a chance to engage with several of the UNT students and help answer questions they had about graduate school, work-life balance, what it’s like working with GPP, and about qualifying for the CPA exams. It was good to interact with them and give them first-hand knowledge of what it’s like once you’ve graduated and are actively working towards everything you’ve studied for. The students appreciated the information we gave them, and they got a better understanding of what it’s like turning theory and book knowledge into real-world application of accounting, tax, and audit."
GPP tax intern Cassie Wyant also joined the group in McKinney to help build the Otubu's home. She had always wanted to participate in a Habitat for Humanity build and was thrilled she got the chance to do so. "I am grateful that I not only had a chance to share this day with my colleagues and peers but with the family themselves. We didn’t just contribute our time and effort to the final touches of the home, it was something far more than that. The little steps we took of hanging doors, assembling cabinets, finishing closets, etc., will forever be a part of the journey to provide this family with the security of their new home."
According to GPP Tax Manager Kristen Porter, it was humbling to work alongside the family who not only participated in their own build but the build of houses for others. “The homeowners were so hardworking. They told me that they worked over 600 hours on their home as well as the homes of others through Habitat for Humanity. They were extremely grateful for being given this opportunity to have a place of their own and excited to be moving in. The Otubu family was looking forward to filling their new home with love, laughter, fun times together, and great memories.”
